(CABG=Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting)
What doctor’s blog would be complete without some rambling on the topic of healthcare and patient responsibility? This is actually a taboo topic of discussion in mixed company, but come to the surgeon’s lounge one day and listen like a fly on the wall. While some cardiovascular disease is unavoidable due to genetics or living near high tension wires, the vast majority would go away if people used common sense. I recently operated on a morbidly obese young woman for a non-cardiac problem. On the day after surgery, I noticed she was eating a tremendous breakfast, more than a standard hospital tray would provide. It turns out her husband brought her a little extra “to make up for the lost day” of eating on the day of surgery. This is only the tip of the iceberg. So, have an extra side of bacon and double cheese on your Big Mac and continue to plaque your coronary arteries until they obstruct. I’ll see you on my operating table in no time.
